The Midway neighborhood of Chicago is a hub of constant movement, defined more by its function as a thoroughfare than as a destination. Bisected by Cicero Avenue, a major shipping route lined with trucks and delivery vans, and anchored by a vast rail yard and Midway Airport, one of the few airports embedded in a residential area, the neighborhood seems built for transit rather than community. Amid the nonstop activity, the local residents often feel secondary, living in the shadow of the infrastructure that defines their surroundings.

Photographer Paul D’Amato has spent the past decade capturing the overlooked essence of this diverse, working-class enclave. Set against a backdrop of bungalows, strip malls, and light industry, his portraits reveal the layered identities of people living in a space that sits between immigration and assimilation. Midway resists easy classification, and it's precisely this in-between quality that drew D’Amato to it. His photographs, now on display in a local gallery and as part of a larger exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center, highlight the unique and often solitary figures who give the area its soul, a celebration of a neighborhood that is as complex and alive as the city itself.
