This catalog accompanies the exhibition On The Avenues at Stephen Daiter Gallery and offers a look at Newman’s artistic career through more than forty vintage black-and-white and color photographs. The publication traces his evolution from his early experimental work at the Institute of Design, featuring inverted sidewalk shadows and minimalist studies of manhole covers, to his documentary photographs from Chicago and New York. It also includes two lyrical series from his 1960 travels: portraits of Parisian prostitutes and scenes from a small Alaskan village. Marking several milestones, the catalog reflects on 2019 as a significant year for Newman: the twentieth anniversary of his first exhibition at Stephen Daiter Gallery, seventy years since his arrival at the Institute of Design in Chicago, and the centennial of the founding of the Bauhaus, the school that inspired the ID’s modernist legacy.
